Imagine getting up every morning and going about your day without brushing your teeth, washing with soap, or putting on deodorant. Most of us cannot imagine this, since these products are inexpensive and very easy to get. Yet for over 3500 inmates in the District-run Central Detention Facility (DC Jail) and the District-contracted Correctional Treatment Facility (CTF), hygiene-products are not guaranteed, and many go from day to day without brushing their teeth or showering, which not only makes them unpleasant to be around, but creates a health-risk for themselves and other inmates. Even when hygiene products are available, they are not free. Many inmates cannot afford the cost unless a family member or friend sends them money from the outside. For that reason, CORM has embarked on a project to provide personal-care items to indigent inmates in D.C.'s correctional facilities on a periodic basis.
